Use of lining materials under posterior resin composite restorations in the UK

Abstract: Objectives: To investigate opinions on, and current use of lining materials prior to the placement of posterior resin composite restorations by general dental practitioners (GDPs) in the UK. A further objective was to investigate aspects of posterior resin composite restoration placement techniques employed by UK GDPs. Methods:A questionnaire was devised to gain the information sought. It was sent to 500 UK dentists, chosen at random from the register of the General Dental Council. Results: Three hundred and fi… Show more

“…11,12 In clinical practice, many dentists no longer place insulating base cements under RBCs, possibly exposing the dentine-pulp complex to harmful irradiation from high-powered LCUs in deep cavities during restoration placement. 13,14 Studies demonstrate that significant heat generation in excess of 5.5°C can also occur during cavity preparation using non water-cooled burs (11.64°C), 7 newer laser-based tooth bleaching techniques (15.96°C), 8 and setting reactions of exothermic materials, such as PMMA-based materials (39°C). 9 It is clear that either the method of determining the change (increase) in temperature, or the validity of the accepted 5.5°C threshold is questionable.…”

“…(1) The placement of a lining was proposed for several reasons: to reduce the number of viable bacteria remaining close to the pulp, to induce development of reactionary/reparative dentine, to possibly remineralize remaining demineralized hard tissues, to isolate the pulp against thermal and electric conduction, to protect pulpal cells against chemical irritants such as methacrylates from adhesives and to prevent the effects of restoration leakage on the pulp. (2) The traditional lining materials include calcium hydroxide, glass ionomer, resin modified glass ionomer, and pure resinous liners with particles releasing therapeutic agents. The success of liners underneath resin composite (RC) depends not just on the bond quality of the liner to the dentin, yet additionally on the nature of bond amongst liner and overlying RC.…”

“…This cross-sectional study was conducted in Lahore, from September 2019 to January 2020. A structured questionnaire was designed which was partly adapted from another similar study conducted by Blum 11 . The questionnaire comprised of three sections, the first one consisting of questions regarding demographics.…”
