Use of FTA Cards for Direct Sampling of Patients' Lesions in the Ecological Study of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

Abstract: The FTA card (Whatman) was assessed for its utility as a molecular epidemiological tool in collecting samples from patients with leishmaniasis in Peru because the card has a variety of merits; it is less invasive for patients and easy to handle for both physicians and other medical personnel for sample collection or diagnosis, in addition to its simplicity and easy countrywide and/or intercountry transportation for analysis.

“…For example, L. (V.) shawi was reported in the same region of Peru where our study was conducted. 17 Also, a study in Venezuela detected Leishmania (L.) venezuelensis in Lu. trinidadensis, the same sand fly species found to be Leishmania positive in our study but without an identifiable species.…”

“…[5][6][7] Recently, to facilitate the sample collection and DNA extraction processes, a FTA card, a filter paper that readily lyses the spotted materials and fixes nucleic acids, was used for direct sampling of patients' materials in an epidemiological study of leishmaniasis. 8 Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in the state of Lara located in western 4 Venezuela, and the causative parasites have been identified as Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) venezuelensis. [9][10][11][12] L. (L.) venezuelensis was originally described on the basis of distinguishable MLEE patterns as a species independent of other members of the L. mexicana complex 9,10 .…”
