Use of Copepod Nauplii During Early Feeding Stage of Grouper Epinephelus coioides

Abstract: Newly-hatched Epinephelus coioides larvae were stocked in five 5-ton tanks at an initial density of 25,000 ind/tank. Copepod nauplii were propagated in four of these tanks by inoculating various densi ties (20 to 80 ind/1) of mixed copepodids of Acartia tsuensis, Pseudodiaptomus spp., and Oithona sp. three days before stocking larvae. Rotifers were added in these tanks on Day 7 at an initial density of 5,000 ind/1. Larvae in the remaining tank were fed rotifers (only) starting Day 2 at 5,000 ind/l. The feeding… Show more

“…Toledo et al (1999) fed nauplii of Acartia tsuensis to larvae of orange-spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides from 2 to 6 DPH, then fed a rotifer diet for the duration of the trial. Those larvae had improved feeding incidence, growth, and survival compared with larvae fed rotifers during the entire trial (Toledo et al 1999).…”

Those larvae had improved feeding incidence, growth, and survival compared with larvae fed rotifers during the entire trial (Toledo et al 1999). First-feeding larvae of turbot Psetta maxima (also known as Scophthalmus maximus) had greater growth and survival when fed Tisbe holothuriae nauplii from 3 to 6 DPH before switching to rotifers than larvae fed rotifers for the entire trial (Stottrup and Norsker 1997).…”

“…On the other hand, benthic animals such as copepods contain more lipids, i.e., 1.6-6.6% (Shansudin et al 1997) or 3.3-13.3% (Toledo et al 1999), which is 2-10 times as much as those in algal mats.…”

“…This group includes snappers of the Lutjanidae family (Schipp, Bosmans, & Marshall, 1999), snooks of the Centropomidae family, combers and groupers of the Serranidae family (Toledo, Golez, Doi, & Ohno, 1999), and Pacific fat sleepers or Dormitator latifrons of the family Eleotridae (Rodríguez Montes de Oca, Medina-Hernández, Velázquez-Sandoval, López-López, Román-Reyes, Dabrowski, & Haws, 2012).…”
