Use of antibiotics in Austria / Antibiotikaeinsatz in Österreich

Abstract: SummaryIn 2015, 119.2 t of active ingredients of antibiotics were used in Austria in human medicine (70.4 t; 59.1%), for food animals (48.8 t; 40.9%) and in plant production (0.002 t; < 0.1%). During the last five years, consumption of antibiotics increased in human medicine by 3. 8% (2011: 67.8 t; 2015: 70.4 t). In hospitals, it increased by 17.3%, from 19.7 t in 2011 to 23.1 t active ingredients in 2015. In the community, measured in kg active ingredient, it increased by 0.3% from 2011 to 2015. Consumption i… Show more

“…This observation is consistent with those of previous studies; however, no explanation regarding why such types of AMR were found has been given so far, as these antibiotics are not used to treat Corynebacterium infections ( 27 , 36 ). In Austria, these two antibiotic families are mostly used in animal medicine ( 42 ). If other Corynebacterium species are considered zoonotic, very few cases of C. diphtheriae carriage or infection in animals have been described ( 43 , 44 ).…”

“…Dismally, however, mcr-1-habouring E. coli have also been isolated from a human patient without a history of travel in Austria (Hartl et al, 2017), suggesting possible acquisition from livestock and community transmission. In 2015, Austria's livestock sector consumed 1,548 kg of COL, which is 300 times more than the five kg amount used in human medicine (Kirchner et al, 2017). Therefore, the selective pressure for mobilization of mcr in Austria might have originated from the livestock setting.…”

“…In comparison with other European countries, the use of antibiotics in Austria is only moderate [ 18 ]. Between the years 2011 and 2015, the total consumption of antibiotics has increased by 3.8%, with beta lactams being the preferred treatment in Austria [ 19 ]. The increase in antibiotic consumption continues, however, some countries have managed to reduce antibiotic prescription in recent years [ 20 – 22 ].…”
