The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between students' perceptions of their biology teachers' interpersonal behavior and their laboratory learning environments and their attitudinal, achievement, and performance outcomes. A sample of 489 students from 28 senior biology classes in eight schools in Tasmania, Australia completed the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) and the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory (SLEI). Responses to two attitude questionnaires, achievement on an external written examination, and performance in laboratory practical tests were used as student outcome measures. Statistical analyses supported the reliability and validity of the QTI and the SLEI when used with senior secondary biology students. We investigated associations between students' perceptions of teacher behavior and their laboratory learning environment with student outcomes, including the unique and common contributions of the QTI and SLEI to variance in student outcomes. Associations with students' perceptions of the learning environment were stronger for the attitudinal outcomes than for the cognitive or practical skills outcomes. Some commonality between the QTI and SLEI scales was found in their contributions to the variance in attitudinal outcomes, but not in their contributions to variance in cognitive and practical skill outcomes.

AbstrakPenelitian kolaborasi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan membandingkan iklim kelas yang dialami (actual climate) dengan iklim kelas yang diinginkan (preferred climate) peserta didik di kelas IV, V dan VI Sekolah Dasar Negeri 10 Ganting, Kecamatan Koto Tangah Kota Padang, Sumatera Barat. Responden penelitian berjumlah 78 orang, masing-masing peserta didik di ketiga kelas tersebut merespon dua macam angket. Alat ukur iklim kelas actual form diadministrasikan terlebih dahulu untuk mengetahui iklim kelas yang dialami peserta didik, kemudian diikuti dengan alat ukur iklim kelas preferred form untuk mengukur iklim kelas yang diinginkan peserta didik. Setelah data yang terkumpul diolah dan dianalisis maka dapat diketahui bahwa beberapa skala iklim kelas yang dialami (actual climate) peserta didik kelas IV, V dan VI SD 10 Ganting tidak jauh berbeda dengan iklim kelas diinginkan (preferred climate). Namun demikian, skala cohesiveness dan satisfaction pada preferred climate di kelas V lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan yang dialami peserta didik (actual climate). Untuk itu, diperlukan langkah-langkah treatment untuk meningkatkan kedua skala tersebut agar iklim kelas sesuai dengan yang diinginkan peserta didik.

Abstract-This research aimed to find out whether there were differences in the climates of kindergartens in Padang. Specifically, this research would see whether there were differences in perceptions among the kindergartens' climate experienced (the actual climate) and the climate of the kindergartens that were desired by teachers (preferred climate). The research samples were 50 kindergartens' teachers representing 305 kindergartens in Padang. To obtain the data, this research used the school climate measurement tool adapted from the School Level Environment Scale (SLEQ) which was originally developed by Fisher. The results generally indicated that no significant differences between the actual climate (3.07) and preferred climate (3.25) by the teachers. However, on the scale of participation in decision making (2.80 : 3.49), and physical comfort (2.86:3.53), the differences were higher compared to other scales. It was hoped that the principal of kindergartens in the city of Padang would minimize the differences by more involving kindergarten teachers in the decision-making processes and increasing the convenience and more adequate of managing infrastructure of kindergarten.
