Use of a Metal Organic Framework for the Adsorptive Removal of Gaseous HCl: A New Approach for a Challenging Task

Abstract: In this work, the potentialities of the amino-functionalized, chromium-based MIL-101 metal organic framework (NH-MIL-101) as a high capacity, fully regenerable hydrogen chloride adsorbent have been proved by a thorough adsorption thermodynamics investigation. The chosen adsorbent showed high gaseous HCl adsorption capacities and, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first example of a totally regenerable substrate for this kind of adsorbate, as evidenced by both experimental and modeling results. This paves… Show more

“…1b). Furthermore, ZIF-8 also surpasses previously tested MOFs such as NH 2 -MIL-101 measured about 6.3 mmol/g at 1 mbar [27] and Fe-BTC measured for highest capacity at 11.8 mmol/g [28] and commercial sorbent such as Bicar (sodium hydrogen carbonate) with a capacity of 7.3 mmol/g, used in the industry for flue gas treatment of acid gases [29].…”

“…The CO 2 capture ability was evaluated by performing adsorption isotherms at 25 °C with a custom gravimetric apparatus based on a McBain-type balance. 30 Briefly, the sample was placed in a pan attached to a silica glass spring in a glassy adsorption chamber. The samples were activated by degassing the chamber at 150 °C for 2 h under a high vacuum.…”

“…The specific surface area (SSA) was measured by N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at −196 °C with a Micromeritics ASAP 2020 instrument, using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. The CO 2 capture ability was evaluated by performing adsorption isotherms at 25 °C with a custom gravimetric apparatus based on a McBain-type balance . Briefly, the sample was placed in a pan attached to a silica glass spring in a glassy adsorption chamber.…”

“…The horizontal axis represents c e , and the vertical axis is q e . By using the nonlinear fitting, the values of q max (mg/g) (the maximum adsorption capacity) and the k L (L/g) is obtained (Gargiulo et al, 2018). The results of q max (mg/g) at 273, 298 and 323 K are shown as 114.29, 176.47 and 214.29 mg/g (Gargiulo et al, 2019), these are tabulated in Table 2 which at the same time lists other parameters.…”
