Use cases and scenarios of 5G integrated satellite‐terrestrial networks for enhanced mobile broadband: The SaT5G approach

Abstract: This paper presents initial results available from the European Commission Horizon 2020 5G Public Private Partnership Phase 2 project "SaT5G" (Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G). 1 After describing the concept, objectives, challenges, and research pillars addressed by the SaT5G project, this paper elaborates on the selected use cases and scenarios for satellite communications positioning in the 5G usage scenario of enhanced mobile broadband.

“…Mendhosa project (Media and entertainment delivery over hetnet with optimized satellite architecture) [16] first examined the requirements and needs of the IT & Media sectors beyond 2020 before selecting suitable integration satcom scenarios, and then assessed the benefits of innovative features on a reference SatCom architecture. In their recent study [17], authors featured the outcomes of their European Union Horizon 2020 funded 5G PPP project, titled Sat5G (Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G). They identified several use cases for the integration of satellite with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) network.…”

“…Nowadays, there are many space projects has emphasized that satellite systems can be used as a section of the 5G infrastructure. For example, shared access satellite‐terrestrial backhaul network enabled by smart antennas (SANSA), virtualized hybrid satellite‐terrestrial systems for resilient and flexible future networks (VITAL), and 5GCHAMPION for 5G communications …”

“…Seamlessly interfacing terrestrial with nonterrestrial networks is part of the beyond 5G vision, as summarized, for example, in Latva‐aho and Leppänen . In this context, developments that parallel the evolution to 5G terrestrial systems have also been under study in SatCom, including a key component of the envisioned air interface, namely waveforms . Early studies on how do 5G candidate waveforms perform in the presence of typical satellite channel impairments include previous works …”
