Use and trade of bitumen in antiquity and prehistory: molecular archaeology reveals secrets of past civilizations

Abstract: Natural asphalt (or bitumen) deposits, oil seepage and liquid oil shows are widespread in the Middle East, especially in the Zagros mountains of Iran. Ancient people from northern Iraq, southwest Iran and the Dead Sea area extensively used this ubiquitous natural resource until the Neolithic period (70006 000 BC). Evidence of earlier use has been recently documented in the Syrian desert (Boe« da et al. 1996) near El Kown, where bitumen-coated £int implements, dated to 40 000 BC (Mousterian period), have been u… Show more

“…En effet, la couleur noire des baumes vieillis était souvent, à tort, associée à la présence de bitume ; cette coloration pouvant être le produit du noircissement naturel des baumes contenant de la résine et/ou des corps gras. Différentes études ont maintenant démontré l'utilisation occasionnelle de ces produits pétrogéniques pour la confection de baumes et dans des objets funéraires (Clark, 2006 ;Serpico et White, 2000 ;Rullkötter et Nissenbaum, 1988 ;Connan, 1999).…”

“…The earliest record of human use of bitumen to date, is as a hafting material 180,000 years ago in the El Kowm Basin in Syria, where it was applied to stick flint implements to the handles of various tools in a way that persisted until Neolithic time [1]. At first, its adhesive and waterproofing properties were generally emphasized.…”

“…Petroleum (from seeps) has been known since ancient times and utilized for many purposes including in construction, as medicine, for water proofing and adhesive (e.g. Connan, 1999). However, exploitation for commercial quantities in relation to fuel for combustion engines began in the last century (Hunt, 1996), as an alternative to another organic substance, coal which was important to the industrial revolution.…”
