Usability Testing of the Interaction of Novices with a Multi-touch Table in Semi Public Space

Abstract: Touch-sensitive devices are becoming more and more common. Many people use touch interaction, especially on handheld devices like iPhones or other mobile phones. But the question is, do people really understand the different gestures, i.e., do they know which gesture is the correct one for the intended action and do they know how to transfer the gestures to bigger devices and surfaces? This paper reports the results of usability tests which were carried out in semi public space to explore peoples' ability to f… Show more

“…It was evaluated by the observation of 150 users of this system and the authors consider it as suitable for less experienced users. Jokisch et al (2011) studied the work made with touch screen, depending on the age of the participants of the experiment. They tried to identify the most intuitive gestures when working with a variant of Google Earth.…”

“…Children versus Adults: Several studies have demonstrated that children are much more willing to ''dive in'' and start interacting with a table and experiment with a range of different gestures (Hornecker 2008;Jokisch et al 2011). Adults, on the other hand, tend to be more tentative and prefer to watch initially before they start an interaction with the table.…”

“…Overall, the children's group exhibited a higher frequency of gesture changes than the adult group (Table 6). (Jokisch, Bartoschek, & Schwering, 2011): the adults spent more time thinking, while the children were quicker to test various gestures. Based on the observations, adults tended to read the instructions, while children tended to rely on intuition.…”

“…Some participants have tried to rotate media items using single-fi nger gestures (Hinrichs & Carpendale, 2011). The literature has pointed out diff erences in gestural patterns between adults and children who manipulated 2D content on a tabletop (Hinrichs & Carpendale, 2011;Jokisch, Bartoschek, & Schwering, 2011). For example, although children interacted more rapidly and more frequently with the table, it was still diffi cult for them to comprehend and employ the right gestures (Jokisch, et al, 2011).…”
