Usability of Statewide Web-Based Roadway Weather Information System

Abstract: A study of the usability of statewide web-based traveler information systems was conducted to assess their effectiveness in conveying road and weather information to travelers. Guidelines from traveler information systems and the website design literature were coalesced to create an assessment framework to include important elements from a user’s perspective. “…6. The more unreliable the information, the less it is acquired and when it is acquired, the less will be its positive impact on travel choice quality. The importance of (perceived) information reliability as a determinant of information use is well grounded in empirical literature (Polydoropulou and Ben-Akiva, 1998;Hato et al, 1999;Fayish and Jovanis 2004). The second part of the hypothesis is based on the notion, found in theoretical studies of travel information effect (e.g.…”

Webbased surveys have been increasingly adapted for transport studies, for example, in stated preference, travel diaries, and travel behavioural studies (Fayish and Jovanis 2004;Stinson and Bhat 2004;DeSalle and Tarko 2003;Marca 2003).…”

“…The evaluation showed that Optimod'Lyon did not yet meet all the technical preconditions demanded by travelers for inducing a change in mobility behavior. Fayish and Jovanis had already observed that user-friendly systems providing accurate information and pleasant graphical design would encourage the use of ATIS (30).…”
