Can Multimodal Real-Time Information Systems Induce a More Sustainable Mobility?

Abstract: Interest in advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) is increasing in modern cities, and more attention is given to real-time multimodal information. Through those systems, decision makers hope to achieve a shift from the car to alternative, environmentally friendly modes of travel. Few comprehensive assessments have been undertaken to verify the actual contribution of ATIS to such modal shift. In this paper, the effects on travel behavior of Optimod’Lyon, a multimodal real-time information navigator for t… Show more

“…The MaaS is still in its infancy and after the exploratory research setting the concept and the ideas (Hietanen 2014;Sochor et al 2015) some researchers are starting to explore the potential of sustainability of MaaS and how it can be implemented and deployed in cities (Pronello et al 2016;Expósito-Izquierdo et al 2017;Goodall et al 2017;Jittrapirom et al 2017). Although the field is emerging, the research seems to grow quickly.…”

“…Frei and Gan [38] reported that smartphone‐based multi‐modal information fosters a shift from car‐only journeys to the use of park‐and‐ride solutions. However, the result is not confirmed in a study on the impact of multi‐modal real‐time information in Lyon, France [39].…”

“…In addition to the studies described above, a number of other projects have been evaluated around Europe. For example, researchers in Lyon have found that users initially evaluated an IMM application positively, but struggled to permanently change their mobility patterns [23]. Portouli et al [24] report similar results after a cross-European study, with actual behavioural change only found in some areas.…”
