Urological Manifestations of Placenta Percreta

Abstract: Placenta percreta is a condition of pregnancy associated with abnormal decidua placenta. It is characterized by invasion of chorionic villi past the myometrium and serosa, towards urogenital organs. Complications include massive hemorrhage, bladder dysfunction, and severe infections during delivery. Reports suggest an increasing prevalence of this condition. From a urological perspective, this review suggests how early diagnostic modalities, effective treatment plans, and appropriate surgical methods may aid i… Show more

“…However, bladder injury was significantly higher in our study; a possible explanation would be that none of our patients underwent subtotal hysterectomy; instead they all underwent total abdominal hysterectomies. Although a meta-analysis has not previously found any advantage of subtotal over total hysterectomy [ 38 ], unsurprisingly as a teaching hospital; JUH has an unblemished strategy for performing total instead of subtotal hysterectomies attended by at least two senior consultants. In fact, subtotal hysterectomy vintages to lower risks of bladder/bowel injuries and blood loss, less lengthy operative time and hospital stay.…”

“…93 The most important risk factor for placenta percreta is the observation of placenta previa in a subsequent pregnancy, following a previous cesarean delivery. 94 Severe hemorrhage may occur, resulting in maternal and/or fetal demise. 95 One meta-analysis found maternal and fetal fatality rates of 6% and 19%, respectively.…”
