“…For 3-PBA, the CTEPP adults (0.3 ng/mL) had similar median urinary metabolite levels as study adults (0.2-0.4 ng/mL) in Canada, Germany, Japan, and Poland. However in China (Qi et al, 2012), the median adult urinary 3-PBA concentrations (1.0 ng/mL) were at least two times higher compared to study adults in the US and in other countries. The authors speculate that the higher urinary 3-PBA levels observed in these adults (pregnant women) may be due to the markedly increased use of pyrethroid insecticides in residential and agricultural settings in China (Qi et al, 2012).…”

“…A number of previous studies have measured 3-PBA and other metabolites in urine samples collected from both adults and children to assess pyrethroid exposure (Barr et al 2010; Fortin et al 2008; Heudorf and Angerer 2001; Lu et al 2006; Qi et al 2012). We found that 3-PBA levels in this urban Mexican population were similar to levels measured in pregnant women who participated in the NHANES during the same time period.…”

“…In a study of pregnant women (n=1149) living in Jiangsu Province, an agricultural area in China, the geometric mean 3-PBA concentration was 0.97 ng/mL (unadjusted for specific gravity) (Qi et al 2012). Children from agricultural regions of Nicaragua and Thailand have also been shown to have relatively high pyrethroid exposures (Panuwet et al 2009; Rodriguez et al 2012).…”

“…A consequence of the increased availability, usage and broad-spectrum applicability of 3-PBA is its widespread exposure among the general population. Recent evidences suggest that 3-PBA is the most frequently detected xenobiotic in human urine [3][11]. Moreover, it also possesses endocrine disrupting activity [12][14], and adversely affects reproductive function and sexual development as well as the immune system in men [15][20].…”
