Urinary cholesterol excretion in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and carcinoma of the prostate

Abstract: Urinary excretion of nonesterified (NEC) and total cholesterol (TC) has been investigated in 79 patients with prostatic adenoma (BPH) and 48 patients with carcinoma of the prostate. Normal range of NEC was determined in 62 healthy individuals and was found to be 0.26-2.2 mg/24 hours (2 SD) with a mean value of 0.76 mg/24 hours. TC ranged from 0.3-2.9 mg124 hours with a mean value of 0.92 mg/24 hours. In benign prostatic hyperplasia normal values for NEC and TC were determined in stages without residual urine. … Show more

“…220 ° C. Quantitation was performed due to the peak height ratio, since alterations of cholesterol and 4-androstenedione concentrations gave a linear response. For the determination of total urinary cholesterol hydrolysis of the dried extract with 0.1 ml 3 N KOH and 0.9 ml ethanol for 60 min at 60°C was necessary prior to GLC [4]. The specificity of the method was confirmed by simultaneous mass-fragment•metric analysis in selected samples +.…”

“…The human genome is also an abstract concept in that no particular, singular, natural object is the referent of the phrase "the human genome." 56 Parents do not pass on just one single human genome to their children. Rather, each person receives a unique genome (unless she is a monozygotic twin) created by the combination of chromosomes inherited from each parent.…”

“…Furthermore, "if the human genome is an abstraction and not a natural object, people's worries about preserving its integ-rity for future generations become concerns about the future of an idea, not a natural resource." 59 Although the human genome is an abstraction, one might understand this abstraction as being embodied in the genomes of all of the people who exist and all who will exist. One might think of the human genome as a kind of cumulative record, in which each piece plays an important role in creating the whole, and together they represent something more significant than merely the sum of their parts.…”
