Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire: Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Quality of Life Measure

Abstract: Indwelling ureteral stents have a significant impact on health related quality of life. The new USSQ is a valid and reliable instrument that is expected to become a standard outcome measure to evaluate the impact and compare different types of stents.

“…Since a perfect ureteral stent that does not cause discomfort remains elusive, a fast and efficient approach to relieve stent-related symptoms is required (9). Joshi et al (5) developed the Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ) in order to evaluate the symptoms and impact on the quality of life of patients following ureteral stents, which included 38 scoring items over six sections, covering: Urinary symptoms, pain, general health, work performance, and sexual matters with additional problems. Additional methods, including the Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAPS), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the Short-form 36 Health Survey Scale (SF-36) α 1 -blockers for the reduction of ureteric stent-related symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis have been applied to evaluate USS in relevant studies (14,15).…”

“…They found that ureteral stents are associated with significant symptoms, such as pain affecting daily activities (80%), urinary symptoms (73%), and reduced work capacity (58%), which reduce quality of life. During the research, it became clear that stents profoundly affect physical and psychosocial health and have a negative impact on functional capacity and work performance [3,5]. In our present study involving 117 patients, we did not find significant difference between the three groups concerning flank pain, hematuria, fever, and urinary tract infection.…”

“…It is a routine justified by the belief that this practice decreases ureteral stricture formation, protects the kidney, and minimizes postoperative pain [2]. However the use of stents is accompanied by significant morbidity, including pain, infection, and irritative voiding symptoms [3,4].…”
