Turbulence statistics were applied to the downwind flow of a Darrieus-type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) to provide insights about VAWT micro-flow characteristics. Micro-turbulence measurements of the flow in front of and behind a VAWT were made using a sonic anemometer. Turbulence data for downwind distances of 0.5 m and 2.0 m from the wind source were collected with and without the VAWT, respectively, using a blower (Type 1 flow) and industrial fans (Type 2 flow) as the wind source. The voltage V, generated by the VAWT was recorded every 15 min. Only the center line of the flow was considered. The Type 2 flow induced a constant spectral power at a high dimensionless frequency range of 0.007 < f < 0.04, perhaps due to the fan configuration, which had a larger wind-swept area. The results show an increase in lateral turbulence, σ v , downwind of the VAWT compared to its longitudinal, σ u , and vertical, σ w , counterparts. Using spectral analysis, the VAWT was found to reduce the horizontal (u and v) turbulent component energies in the dimensionless frequency range of 0.003-1. Interesting dip and peak features were observed for Type 1 flow, but only dip features were observed for Type 2 flow in the resulting spectra. Higher wind speeds increased the voltage generated at a rate of 0.5.

Installation of small and medium-size wind turbines on the rooftops of high buildings has been often suggested by architects and project developers as a valuable solution for achieving sustainable energy in building design. In such locations, however, because of the presence of buildings and other adjacent obstructions, wind is normally turbulent, unstable and weak, in terms of direction and speed. The use of wind turbines in the built environment pose challenges to overcome, including energy yield reduction due to lower mean wind speeds in urban areas and associated environmental impacts because of their close vicinity to the property and people.There is a need to understand the inflow wind conditions for a small wind turbine in the builtenvironment. A resource assessment of the potential wind site in the built environment can determine the wind characteristics including zones of wind acceleration, recirculation, blocking and channeling. This knowledge is crucial for input into the design process of a small wind turbine to accurately predict blade fatigue loads and ensure that it operates safely with a performance that is optimized for the environment.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a useful method to model the wind flows in order to perform a resource assessment for the application of small wind turbines in a manner that requires less time and investment than a measurement campaign. This paper presents the results of research using a CFD code to model wind flow over the roof of a building and assess the possibility of combining a CFD package with a wind atlas software to form a wind energy resource assessment tool for the application of small wind turbines on the roof of a building. Experimentation with the model shows that the results are particularly sensitive to building height and shape, roof shape, wind direction, and turbine installation height and location. The results will be used to help develop a recommended practice of wind resource assessment in the built environment, in an international collaborative effort via the International Energy Agency Task 27.

This work presents the characterization and assessment of wind energy potential in annual and monthly levels of the sites of Lomé, Accra and Cotonou located in the Gulf of Guinea, and the optimal characteristics of wind turbines to be installed on these sites. Studies of characterization and the wind potential of these sites from the wind speed data collected over a period of thirteen years at a height of 10 meters above the ground, show an annual average speed of 3.52 m/s for Lomé, 3.99 m/s for Cotonou and 4.16 m/s for Accra. These studies also showed that a monthly average speed exceeding 4 m/s was observed on the sites of Cotonou and Accra during the months of February, March, April, July, August and September and during the months of July, August and September on the site of Lomé. After a series of simulation conducted using the software named PotEol that we have developed in Scilab, we have retained that the wind turbines rated speeds of ~8 to 9 m/s at the sites of Lomé and Cotonou and ~ 9 to 10 m/s on the site of Accra would be the most appropriate speeds for optimal exploitation of electric energy from wind farms at a height of 50 m above the ground.Article History: Received May 26th 2016; Received in revised form August 24th 2016; Accepted August 30th 2016; Available onlineHow to Cite This Article: Salami, A.A., Ajavon, A.S.A , Kodjo, M.K. and Bédja, K.
