Urban tree diversity—Taking stock and looking ahead

Abstract: The first International Conference on Urban Tree Diversity hosted in June 2014 by the Swedish University of Agricultural Science in Alnarp, Sweden highlighted the need for a better understanding of the current state of urban tree diversity. Here we present and discuss a selection of urban tree diversity themes with the intention of developing and sharing knowledge in a research area that is gaining momentum. We begin by discussing the specific role of species diversity in ecosystem service provision and ecosys… Show more

“…It may be useful to increase the value of biodiversity when designing new green areas or to restore existing ones, but choosing among plants that also provide an advantage in terms of reducing air pollution. Globally, cities are experimenting with different ways to increase and support tree species richness, thanks to environmental and land cover heterogeneity and socioeconomic factors, in order to deliver ecosystem stability and services [85].…”

“…This heterogeneous character, that is also important from an assessment and monitoring perspective, can better represent the variety of urban green space types. Furthermore, this study takes into consideration the call for greater attention to tree diversity in planning and management of urban areas [68] as evident from the number of indicators linked to biodiversity.…”

“…In urban ecosystems, what includes urban forests, the green spaces can bring some ecosystems services that contribute to a significant quality of life (GÓMEZ-BAGGETHUN;BARTON, 2013;MORGENROTH et al, 2016). In this time of environmental crisis, with particular reference to global warming, a high quality urban forest becomes even more important, considering that the vegetation mitigates the effects of climate change in urban areas and improves the quality of life (MORGENROTH et al, 2016).…”
