Previous studies using rats as sentinel animals for assessing the chronic effects of air pollution disclosed functional alterations of mucociliary clearance, inflammatory changes along the respiratory tract, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in exposed animals (13)(14)(15)(16) (17).
