Urban form and travel behavior: experience from a Nordic context

Abstract: This article surveys the results of research carried out in the Nordic countries on the influence of various aspects of urban form and settlement patterns on travel behavior and discusses these results in the view of studies carried out in other European, American, Australian, and Asian countries. There is overwhelming evidence that urban spatial structures matter to travel behavior. However, whereas much of the research in America and parts of Europe has focused on the influences of local neighborhood charact… Show more

“…The basic mechanisms through which urban structure influences travel are theoretically well understood and have been identified in numerous empirical studies (see Naess, 2012a for an overview of such studies within a Nordic context). Compact cities tend to be less car-dependent, provide for shorter trips and have lower per capita consumption of energy for transportation than do sprawling, low-density cities (see, e.g.…”

“…Other researchers have also recently sought to offer a reduced set of metrics to quantify neighborhood form, including street density and connectivity (Song, Popkin, and Gordon-Larsen 2013). Distance to secondary centers has not been used frequently in US research but has been employed in relevant studies in Europe (Naess 2011(Naess , 2012.…”

“…A particular emphasis in the sustainable city agenda has been put on energy consumption in transportation and everyday travel behaviours. For many authors there is a direct relation between transport and urban form [20][21][22]. Unlike the previous works, now the question is not how to improve the maladies originating from the modern urban planning approach, but how to generate the urban qualities demanded by the new trend of compact cities, which has become the paradigm of the sustainable city.…”
