“…The uranium binding can produce conformational changes in proteins (Gray, 1994; Ghosh & Rosen, 2002;Yazzie et al, 2003). Uranium ions can generate ligands with functional groups of thiolates as well as carboxylate from acidic amino acids, such as aspartate or glutamate (Ghosh & Rosen, 2002;Van Horn & Huang, 2006;Zobel & Beer, 1961). Enzymes in G. sulfurreducens that assist in protein folding may help to avoid these potential deleterious effects.…”

“…sulfurreducens is an aerotolerant anaerobe, with effective mechanisms for dealing with oxidative stress (Lin et al, 2004;Van Horn & Huang, 2006). Many proteins that are involved in the typical oxidative stress response in bacteria are also induced in response to other environmental stimuli, such as heat (Geslin et al, 2001;Privalle & Fridovich, 1987), high salt concentrations (Bernhardt et al, 1997) and heavy metals stress (Bernhardt et al, 1997;Chourey et al, 2006;Geslin et al, 2001;Roux & Covés, 2002).…”

“…Recently, separation of uranium from diluted aqueous solution has been playing important role in separation sciences and has been engaging more attention than before (De 2000;Gupta and Singh 2003) with regard to environmental impact. Release of uranium-bearing aqueous solution from uranium material processing plant is found to be one of the major sources of environmental contaminants with the radioactive material, which is required to be separated to avoid a detrimental effect to aquatic life as well as human beings (Liao et al 2004;Van Horn and Huang 2006;Li et al 2010;Zhang et al 2011). …”

“…[3] Uranyl compounds are also neurotoxins. In mammals, uranyl ion (UO 2 2 + ) is mainly complexed by blood-transferring [4] and by low molecular weight complexing agents such as citrates, bicarbonates and phosphates.…”

“…The hemoglobin (Hb) microspheres fabricated by the porous template covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly were utilized as artificial oxygen carriers and blood substitutes. Magnetic nanoparticles of iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) were loaded in porous CaCO 3 particles for magnetically assisted chemical separation (MACS). Through the adsorption spectrum of magnetic Hb microspheres after adsorbing UO 2 2 + , it was found that UO 2 2 + was highly loaded in the magnetic Hb microspheres, and it shows that the presence of UO 2 2 + in vivo destroys the structure and oxygen-transporting capability of Hb microspheres.…”
