The natural radioactivity levels in water samples along the Tigris river (one of the major rivers of the world) within Baghdad city were investigated to determine and evaluate the radioactivity risks in the water of the river. The specific activity of the radionuclides (238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs) for thirty different water samples from Tigris river within Baghdad city were measured using gamma-ray spectrometer, employing a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The results showed that the average value of the specific activity for 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were (24.20, 16.70, 329.22, and 19.40) Bq/l, respectively. The calculated average annual effective doses for different age groups were found to be (3.80, 6.57, and 5.59) mSv/y for infants, children, and adults, respectively, which are much higher than the globally allowed annual limits of the dose (0.26, 0.2 and 0.1) mSv/y for infants, children and adults, respectively, and it has harmful effects on health.

The fundamental goal of the current study is to determine the mean activity concentrations of natural and artificial radionuclides of 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, and 137 Cs using gamma spectrometry for three locations, in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, which are significant and vital countries in the Middle East. The mean absorbed dose rate equals 22.35, 28.96, and 43.34 nGy h -1 for Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. The results are consistent with international reports. The dose contribution percentages for investigated locations are 24 %, 30 %, and 46 % for Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, respectively. The obtained results were clarified by statistical measurements using one-way ANOVA test to determine the distribution and differences between the averages of the three groups under study, as they may be influenced by geological variations and human intervention. It was found that the Iraq samples followed a symmetrical, standard normal distribution, while samples from Egypt and Saudi Arabia did not. Statistically significant differences were found between the data from the three countries.

In this study, measurement of alpha emitters such as radon-222, radium-226, and uranium-238 levels in Iraqi of medical plants samples using CR-39 detector. As well as, annual average internal dose (AAIED) and risk of an excess cancer fatality per million persons (RECFPMP) due to ingestion of radon, radium, and uranium from samples in the present study were calculated. The average values with stander error of radon-222, radium-226, and uranium-238 activity in unit Bq/kg were 5.22 ±0.94, 0.3409 ±0.061, and 5.20 ±0.942, respectively. While, the average values of AAIED and RECFPMP due to alpha emitters in all samples of medical plants were 0.348±0.063 μSv/y and 1.21±0.221, respectively. Analysis of samples has been studied and therefore compared with the internationally published and permissible range that has been recommended by the international scientific committees. Accordingly, it was found that radiation levels in medicinal herbs available in local markets were fallen within natural and allowed limits and therefore don't impose any danger out of the radioactive aspect in terms of human consumption and use of medical treatment.
