Uranium Concentration in Some Medical Herbs

Abstract: Uranium concentration and the annual committed effective dose in some selected medicinal plants commonly used in Iraq have been determined using fission tracks technique etch in twelve medical plants samples using CR-39 track detector. The results show that the uranium concentration ranged from 0.044±0.021 ppm in Thyme sample to 0.2±0.03 ppm in Black Pepper and Cardamom samples with an average value of 0.14 ±0.0 4ppm. The average annual effective dose due to ingestion of uranium radionuclide was 13.77x10 -5 mS… Show more

“…The remaining sixteen percent comes from man-made radiation sources. The exposure of human beings to ionizing radiation from natural sources is a continuing and inescapable feature of life on earth; for most individuals, this exposure exceeds that from all man-made sources combined [2]. As the public becomes more aware of the dangers of nuclear radiation, all sources of nuclear radiation must be monitored [3].…”

“…They include, for example, mineral or elemental composition, pH, moisture content, and grain size. These variables help increase the activity concentration at the land level [13,20,21,23,24,25]. In the author's opinion, the Middle East region is nearly similar in its geological formations; thus, the radionuclides contents are close in magnitude.…”

“…The alpha particles may cause destroy the normal tissues of different organs via their toxic effects [5]. There are many researches in the previous studies to measure radioactivity in medical plants [7][8][9][10]. The aim of this research is to evaluate alpha emitters (222Rn, 226Ra, and 238U) concentrations in different samples of medical plants that manufactured in Iraq and available in Iraqi markets using CR-39 detector.…”
