Uptake and Dissemination of Multi-Criteria Decision Support Methods in Civil Engineering—Lessons from the Literature

Abstract: The SCOPUS and Wed of Science bibliometric databases were searched for papers related to the use of multi-criteria methods in civil engineering related disciplines. The results were analyzed for information on the reported geographical distribution of usage, the methods used, the application areas with most usage and the software tools used. There was a wide geographical distribution of usage with all northern hemisphere continents well represented. However, of the very many methods available, a small number s… Show more

“…The developed framework can offer a practical application in the disaster resilient infrastructure context as it can support the problem structuring of these problems by facilitating the identification of problem-relevant decision attributes. The same process can (supposedly) be applied to other similar contexts, since selecting decision attributes is the primary and critical step of decision analysis and modeling in general, particularly when the popularity of MCDA in environmental, engineering, and management studies is growing (Keisler and Linkov 2014;Bruen 2021). Employing a systematically selected set of attributes for decision models could reduce the uncertainty related to decision factors in multi-objective or multi-criteria decision-making models.…”

“…Multi-criteria decision-making methods are not only comprehensive, but also well-known instruments that are used for resolving decision-making dilemmas in architecture, construction, urban planning, and energy efficiency projects. As shown in territorial delimitation presented in articles by Ogrodnik (2019) and Bruen (2021), Asia, North America, and Europe (notably Poland and Lithuania, followed by Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, and France) are the leading study hubs on the topic of multi-criteria decisionmaking in architecture and civil engineering. In the aforementioned articles, researched authors used wide range of different methods, i.e.…”

“…The need to apply multi-criteria analysis in the decision-making process for the study and planning of a transport infrastructure [5] project is due to the characteristics of the infrastructure, which are considered a public good, in order to reduce the problems and risks associated with the development of such projects. The proposed methodology provides a complete and systematic solution to this problem.…”
