Updated checklist of Hemerobiidae (Neuroptera) from Brazil and new distributional records in the Neotropical Region

Abstract: Hemerobiidae (Insecta, Neuroptera) is a cosmopolitan clade that comprises about 600 described species distributed into 26 genera. Since the publication of revisions to Hemerobius, Megalomus, Nusalala and Nomerobius, new records have been added in literature and taxonomic modifications have occurred at the genus level. The aim of this study was to update a checklist of Hemerobiidae species from Brazil and of specimens deposited at Coleção de Invertebrados do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa da Amazônia (INPA), Ma… Show more

“…Hemerobiidae (Neuroptera), commonly know as brown lacewings, include about 590 species described in 28 genera, and are found on all continents, except Antartica (Oswald 1993;Engel et al 2018). For Brazil are known 24 species of hemerobiids distributed in six genera (Lara and Perioto 2016;Machado and Martins 2021).…”

“…Hemerobiidae was represented by three genera in our study; in Brazil, the family has six genera and 23 species (Lara and Perioto 2016). Despite being relatively common in collections, the information on these insects is scarce and further study should be encouraged, especially in connection to the importance of hemerobiids as biological control agents in other countries (Lara et al 2008) and still unexplored in Brazil.…”

“…Comments. Four species of Sympherobius occur in Brazil, and only one species from southern Brazil was reported prior to this study: Sympherobius gayi Navás, 1910 from Rio Grande do Sul state(Lara and Perioto 2016).…”

“…Nusalala Navás, 1913, is a Neotropical genus known from southern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands (where it is especially rich in species) and South America with about 20 described species (Oswald 2020). It replaces the genus Micromus Rambur, 1842, in South America (Monserrat 2000;Lara and Perioto 2016).…”

“…The question, which of the many Nusalala species with normal wings known from Central and South America (Monserrat 2000(Monserrat , 2004Lara and Perioto 2016;Martins 2019;Oswald 2020) might have a common stem species with N. peruana sp. nov., cannot be answered yet.…”
