Update on the epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease in Asia: where are we now?

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has become a global disease. As IBD is a chronic disease that can result in remarkable morbidity and disability, estimation and understanding the disease burden of IBD is imperative to prepare adequate health care systems. However, variations in IBD incidence or prevalence may reflect differences in the distribution, and there are regional disparities in Asia with a large population of approximately 4.6 billion in 2020, which is equivalent to 60% of the total world population. … Show more

“…IBD, a category that encompasses Crohn disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic inflammatory intestinal disorder characterized by ulcers and inflammation of unknown cause in the small intestine and colon, with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloody stool. The industrialized Asian countries have shown a rapidly rising incidence and subsequent explosive increase in the prevalence of IBD, as in Western countries [21]. The pathogenesis of IBD has been reported to be related to epithelial barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation with uncontrolled augmentation of the immune reaction, genetic alterations, and environmental factors such as a westernized diet and lifestyle [22,23].…”

“…1 IBD can contribute to the symptoms of bloody stool, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever, which can compromise the patients' quality of life, exerting a vast substantial burden on public healthcare. 2 Although tremendous advances, such as genetic susceptibility, gut microbiota dysregulation and mucosal barrier, have been made to understand risk factors involved in the pathogenesis of IBD, the primary disease etiology remains obscure. [3][4][5] The main goals of IBD therapy are to reduce inflammation, promote mucosal healing, and improve the patient's life quality.…”

“…Over the past three decades, the prevalence of CD has increased by almost 40 times worldwide. The incidence is higher in Europe and North America (3.77 to 6.38 cases per 100,000 person-years) and is rising worldwide, particularly in areas with previously low morbidity (Africa, Asia, and South America) ( 3 , 4 ). While CD has become a global disease, its etiology and pathogenesis remain unknown.…”
