Update on resistance status of Anopheles gambiae s.s. to conventional insecticides at a previous WHOPES field site, "Yaokoffikro", 6 years after the political crisis in Côte d'Ivoire

Abstract: BackgroundAt Yaokoffikro field site near Bouaké, in central Côte d'Ivoire, a group of experimental huts built in 1996 served over many years for the evaluation of insecticides against highly resistant mosquitoes. Breeding sites of mosquitoes and selection pressure in the area were maintained by local farming practices until a war broke out in September 2002. Six years after the crisis, we conducted bioassays and biochemical analysis to update the resistance status of Anopheles gambiae s.s. populations and dete… Show more

“…CAR has promoted use of long-lasting insecticidal nets as one of the main components of the national malaria control programme, with indoor residual spraying by households with insecticides available on the market, which we noted at nearly every study site. Therefore, insecticides used against other insects of medical or agricultural importance may exert indirect selection pressure on these two mosquito species [63, 64]. Similar observations have been made for resistance of Ae.…”

“…This situation was also reported in many West African countries where high kdr frequencies of >90% have been detected in An. gambiae in Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Benin, Ghana and Nigeria (Yawson et al, 2004;Awolola et al, 2005;Corbel et al, 2007;Djogbénou et al, 2007;Dabire et al, 2012, Yadouleton et al, 2011Oduola et al, 2010;Koffi et al, 2012). It has also been detected recently in Togo (Ketoh et al, 2009).…”

“…It seems reasonable to assume that the mortality of ‘Akron’ to deltamethrin would be less than that of population ‘Yaokoffikro’, based on lower mortality of An . gambiae s.s. in Asecna and Ladji [27] (neighbouring Akron) than in Yaokoffikro [11,28]. …”
