Update on management of keloid and hypertrophic scars: A systemic review

Abstract: Numerous therapeutic strategies have been described for prevention and reduction of hypertrophic scars and keloids, but none of the treatments is effective in all patients. No universal consensus in treatment regimen has been established, and there is limited evidence‐based literature to guide the correct management. The process of scar development is complex and requires deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms that cause their development and recurrences. Despite many available modes of targeting kel… Show more

“…At present, the treatment of scars at domestic and overseas mostly uses local drug sealing, skin transplantation, surgical resection, and skin grafting. 6 Some treatments are not very mature clinically, and the efficacy remains to be seen. In addition, most treatments take a long time and are accompanied by pain, are prone to recurrence and have many side effects, most of which are unsatisfactory.…”

“…It is an abnormal form characterized by continuous, localized inflammation in the wound region, which results in excessive collagen synthesis and an overstated accumulation of extracellular matrix components in these wounds. Examples of excessive wound healing are keloid and hypertrophic scars [17].…”

“…8 A plethora of recent studies revealed that microneedling can provide significant improvements of acne scars, regardless of severity (mild-severe) at baseline, scar type (global, icepick, rolling, boxcar). [9][10][11] Ameloriation in skin by microneedling was related to promoting neocollagenesis as well as to modulation of gene expression in treated skin, inducing skin repair. 12 Vitamin C improves and promotes tissue repair and neocollagenesis.…”
