Abstract: Orientation of the images bottom-up rather than top-down, led to a steeper learning curve, but had little or no impact on the subsequent transfer of skills.

“…This plethora of information may seem distracting to the expert who already knows these elements. Despite experienced obstetricians' reservations about the training format, the substantial performance improvements following training confirm the findings of previous studies that perceived learning is not predictive of actual performance 25,26 .…”

“…A study with 60 medical students also using the Intelligent Ultrasound simulator supported the use of individualized training on simulators to steepen the learning curve for trainees. The same simulator was used to show that performance of FAST (focused assessment with sonography for trauma) scans could be assessed in a non-clinical setting on simulators [10,11]. The Schallware simulator was used for test development for the diagnostic abdominal ultrasound exam using the European curriculum, and training on the simulator prior to clinical training was shown to improve scanning performance on patients [12,13].…”

“…Transvaginal ultrasound is the first-line technique examination for any gynaecological pathology globally. Despite its universal distribution, transvaginal ultrasound does not benefit from any international consensus on the image orientation reference analysis plan 11 . The sagittal analysis of a female pelvis can thus be performed by the sonographer according to two potential analysis plans: the top-down ("Gynaecology plane") and the bottom-up ("Radiology plane").…”

“…In a recent study, Taksøe‐Vester et al . 11 demonstrated that bottom‐up compared with top‐down image orientation on transvaginal ultrasound imaging led to steeper learning curves, with fewer attempts and less time needed to reach expert levels of performance.…”
