Unveiling geothermal potential sites along Gulf of Suez (Egypt) using an integrated geoscience approach

Abstract: The appraisal of geothermal sites along Gulf of Suez, is important to develop the renewable energy resources in Egypt. An integrated approach based on remote sensing, Geographic Information System and geophysical methods were used to predict the ubication of promising geothermal sites. Multi‐source datasets were selected, analysed and integrated to develop a Geothermal Potential Model. Information‐Value and Weight‐of‐Evidence analyses were adopted to derive ranks and weights to spatial factors and their classe… Show more

“…In Italy, a data integration tool using GIS was described to build-up a map of the geothermal favorability of Sicily, southern Italy (Trumpy et al 2015). More recently, in Egypt, a GIS-based weighted overlay technique was applied to produce geothermal favorability map using different datasets including tectonic lineament data, temperature logs, and geophysical potential field data (Abdel Zaher et al 2018;Abuzied et al 2020;Abdel-Fattah et al 2021).…”

“…The mapping process utilized data from Landsat 8 OLI. The utilization of GIS and RS in geothermal exploration proved to be crucial, as these tools offer a more powerful and cost-effective appraisal of geothermal resources [11,60].…”

“…Therefore, worldwide researchers have suggested that Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques, including thermal bands on satellite images like Landsat−8 OLI/TIRS, be considered as valuable and cost-effective tools for evaluating geothermal resources. These methods estimate the land surface temperature (LST) and have been employed by researchers to delineate areas with geothermal potential in different geological settings [11][12][13][14].…”

“…Niche models were initially applied to the prediction and analysis of species distribution. In recent years, they have been widely used to predict the distribution and dynamics of landslides, debris flows, floods and other disasters [18]. When a niche model is applied to predict potential geothermal disaster areas, the known geothermal locations in the study area are considered to be equivalent to the known distribution of disaster locations, and environmental variables are used as prediction variables.…”

“…In 2020, Abuzied used Bayesian statistical models in the coastal area of the Gulf of Suez, Egypt, to identify potential geothermal areas [17]. In 2021, Abdel-Fattah pointed out the possible locations of geothermal reservoirs by using information value and evidence weight analyses [18]. In earlier research, we used eight environmental variables to construct a traditional entropy weight information model and an evidence weight information model of geothermal anomalies along the Sichuan-Tibet railway in China [19].…”
