Unusual behavior of the conductivity of LiNO3 in tert-butanol: ion clustering or ion-pair aggregation

Abstract: The electrical conductance of LiNO3 in tert-butanol–water mixed solvents changes gradually from "normal" in pure water to "abnormal" in pure tert-butanol. In water the measured specific conductance increases with increase of temperature, and in tert-butanol the conductance decreases with increase of temperature. In pure tert-butanol, the electrical conductances of NH4ClO4 and LiClO4 increase with the salt concentration and temperature at lower temperatures, but decrease at higher temperatures. The molar conduc… Show more

“…3, 1999 would fit less well into the methanol structure. On the other hand, the globular methyl group hinders methanol from efficiently solvating Li + and NO 3ions (Zhao and Freeman, 1995). Both these effects govern the smooth variation of κ s vs m isotherms (Figure 5) with higher compressibility in methanolic lithium nitrate systems.…”

“…In the study of diffusion of solvated electrons (e s - ) in solvents, the mobilities of ions are needed as reference data. , In our study of the reactivities of e s - with ions in water/alcohol mixed solvents, the conductances of ionic solutes were also measured to approximate the mutual diffusion coefficients of the reactants (e s - + ion) in a solvent. Both reactivity of e s - and the mobilities of e s - 6 and ions in solvents are affected by the solvent structure.…”
