(Eingeg. d. 23. 2. 1904.)Die Beobachtungen, welche ich bei Verwendung von feinfaserigen Stoffen (Watte, Glaswolle) zum Trocknon der im M a r s h sehen Apparate entwickelten Gase machte 2 ), führten zu der Vermutung, daß der Arsenwasserstoff durch derartige Substanzen zersetzt werde.Um hierüber Gewißheit zu erlangen, stellte ich Versuche in größerem Maßstabe an. Diese schienen zunächst die gehegte Vermutung nicht zu bestätigen, da Arsenwasserstoff, durch Wasserstoffgas stark verdünnt, in einem Glasgefäße mit Baum-oder Glaswolle aufbewahrt, auch bei Gegenwart von Luft, tagelang unverändert blieb. Als ich dann aber die Versuche dahin abänderte, daß ich f e u c h t e Materialien anwandte, war alsbald eine Einwirkung zu bemerken, Bei der Verwendung im M a r s h sehen .Apparate ist ja die Baumwolle anfangs wohl trocken, aber sie nimmt dann die Feuchtigkeit aus dem Gase auf, so daß sie alsbald zer-] setzend wirken kann. Hier spielt also auch, wie bei so vielen chemischen Reaktionen, die Gegenwart von Wasser eine große Rolle.

Das Pikrat bildet rothbraune, griinlich schimmernde Nadeln, welche schon beim Kochen mit Wasser und vie1 Alkohol in ibre Bestandtheile zerfallen. Bei 215O sintert es zusammen, zersetet sich jedoch sofort unter Gasentwicklung. E i n w i r k u n g v o n C h l o r j o d a u f ps-C u m i d i n .
Als im Herbste dee Jahres 1902 von dem Vorstande der Deut-&n Chemischen Geaellschaft die Auffordernng an mich gerichtet wnrde, ein Lebensbild meines geliebten Bruders zu entwerfen, schien ea rnir im ersten Augenblick unmoglich, diese Aufgabe zu tbernehmen. Ich emptand nicht nhr die groSen allgemeinen Schwierigkeiten, sondern vor allem die besonderen personlichen Bedenken, welche eich aue meinem verwandtschaftlichen Verhliltnisse zu dem friih Geschiedenen ergaben. Sie wollten sich auch durch die Erwiigung nicht beschwichtigen lassen, d& die gemeinsam verlebte Jugend und unsere dwcb ein ganzes Leben fortgeeetzten imigen Beziehungen mir eine Ptille von Erinnerungen und schdtlichen Zeugnissen seiner Entwickelung hinterlassen baben, welche eine wertvolle Grundlage fur ein Lebensbild abgeben konnten. Dieee Bedenken habe ich in eingehender Darlegung zum Ausdruck gebracht. Sie wurden freundlich, aber enfechieden zuriiokgewiesenund so glaubte ich mich der verantwortungsvollen und zugleich mir teuren Pflicht nicht entziehen zu dilrfen.Die Arbeit hat mehr Zeit erfordert und auch, -trot2 aller Beschriinkuog, einen groseren Umfang angenommen, als ich erwartet batte. Beides war bedingt durch die groSe Zahl der Briefe, die ich ron Victors Hand besitze, und die ich nach MaI3gabe deb Zweckes dieser Aufzeichnungen benutzt habe: ich wollte Victor, soweit es. irgend anging, mit seinen eigenen Worten sprechen lasaeo. Die Briefe empfing ich im -Lade unserea ganzen gemeinsamen Lebens; sie umfsesen die Zeit yom ersten Fortgange aus dem Elternhause bis drei Tage vor seinem Tode und sind siimtlich stenographisch geachrieben. Victors Natur gemHD erziihlen sie von allem, was ibn beriihrte, auf Reisen schrieb er fast triglich, wenn auch oft nur flachtige Bleistiftkartea.Berichte d D. Chem GeaeUachalt J.hrg.
