Unscrambling method and methodology in action research traditions: theoretical conceptualization of praxis and emancipation

Abstract: Action research is a participatory approach that is used in an array of contexts. From its first proposition it comprises four core principles: participation and collaboration; a constant spiral cycle of self-reflection; knowledge generation; and practice transformation. Praxis and emancipation are two important analytical categories in AR, but are conceptualized differently in the two existing AR traditions. These conceptualizations reveal different AR aims, which lead to either the use of AR as a method (Nor… Show more

“…Researchers consistently put forward the claim that a key aspect of action research is that it is underpinned by a continual cycle of self-refection, see for example Israel, Schulz, Parker, Becker, Allen, & Guzman (2003), Kemmis (2008) and Kemmis and McTaggart (2000). What came out of the pre-service teachers' experiences that is consistent with the literature is that the research cycle is not linear, but a fluid, iterative, open, complex, and responsive process that leads to a deepened awareness of practice and theory (Cordeiro, et al 2016).…”

“…There is a long history in the literature on action research that extends for over seventy years, and from this literature four key features are inherent in an action research study. These are: 1) participation and collaboration; 2) a constant and iterative cycle of self-reflection, which includes planning, acting, observing, and reflecting; 3) knowledge generation; and 4) practice transformation (Cordeiro, Baldini Soares & Rittenmeyer, 2016). There is an extensive body of research that describes collaboration and participation in action research studies (Kemmis & McTaggart, 2000).…”

“…This means that AR may be used jointly with other methods. Moreover, AR is a collaborative method (Cordeiro et al, 2017;Denis & Lehoux, 2009) which facilitates its use with other quantitative and qualitative methods. Its flexibility also helps to include different methods in the corresponding phases.…”

“…[3][4] It is a great challenge for researchers in the development of R-A to provide participants with the understanding that they are the main actors of the study, that the construction of knowledge and the transformation of practice need to be both at the time of study, but for the transformation of reality, which certainly goes beyond the period of research involvement. 31 It is understood as another challenging aspect, in the development of the R-A, the description of the methodological course, presenting it clearly to the reader. 4 However, it should be noted that the researcher is often faced with boundaries of lags imposed by the journals and sometimes inexperience may English/Portuguese J Nurs UFPE online., Recife, 13(1):227-35, Jan., 2019 233…”
