There is a growing interest in pre-service teacher education programs on how to maximise the learning benefits of professional experience. This study attempts to discover how action research can be used as a vehicle to bridge the divide between theory and practice and to support pre-service teachers in the development of authentic professional knowledge. In this paper, we share the experiences of four pre-service teachers who undertook an action research study whilst on a ten-week professional experience placement in an Australian High School. The findings of the study indicate that preservice teachers see the benefit of being able to conduct an authentic study not only in terms of developing research skills, but also in order to reflect upon their strengths and areas of development in their own teaching. We argue that with a growing attentiveness to raising accountability across the sector, this approach prepares pre-service teachers for the Teacher Performance Assessment and the classroom.

Although it was first developed in the field of psychology, action research is a methodology of growing importance in business and management contexts. In this research article, we focus on a significant aspect of action research: the variety of methodologies that can be used jointly in an action research study and its relationships. More specifically, the aim of this study is to underscore the definition of action research as a meta-methodology that encompasses different ways of carrying out empirical research. To this end, we perform a meta-analysis of articles discussing empirical research that used an action research methodology. The meta-analysis is based on a systematic review of articles published between 2000 and 2018. The main findings suggest that action research may be regarded as a multidisciplinary method and that it can be implemented jointly with other methodologies; not just qualitative methods but also quantitative research. Consequently, action research may now be defined as a meta-methodology or an umbrella process. In this way, action research is a tool whose implementation ought to be promoted in the business/management field as a way of enhancing relevant, rigorous empirical studies and serving as a framework reference in projects based on research and practice contribution as well as active collaboration between researchers and practitioners.

Objective: to identify the potentialities, weaknesses and challenges of research-action (R-A) in national nursing publications. Method: this is a bibliographical study, of integrative type, with searches in the LILACS and MEDLINE databases, from national publications from 2012 to 2017, using Thiollent's Research-Action methodological framework. The studies were critically reviewed, following the precepts of the R-A method, according to Thiollent. The results are presented in figures and tables. Results: 15 articles were selected and the majority presented the exploratory phase, conceptualizing R-A and emphasizing the joint construction of knowledge. Conclusion: Potentials, fragilities and challenges of the use of R-A for nursing research were identified. As a potential of the method, the possibility of transforming reality due to the close relationship between researchers and participants is highlighted; as fragilities, the methodological variability of the studies, which makes replication difficult due to the lack of a phase pattern, the disconnection of the field and the adequate return to the participants. It becomes a challenge for researchers to maintain methodological rigor. It is intended, with this study, to subsidize researchers who opt for the use of the R-A method and contribute to its strengthening in Nursing research.
