Unravelling the health status of brachycephalic dogs in the UK using multivariable analysis

Abstract: Brachycephalic dog breeds are regularly asserted as being less healthy than non-brachycephalic breeds. Using primary-care veterinary clinical data, this study aimed to identify predispositions and protections in brachycephalic dogs and explore differing inferences between univariable and multivariable results. All disorders during 2016 were extracted from a random sample of 22,333 dogs within the VetCompass Programme from a sampling frame of 955,554 dogs under UK veterinary care in 2016. “…The data collection and analysis methods applied in the current study are similar to those recently reported to investigate disease risk in brachycephalic dogs [ 96 ]. The current study included dogs receiving primary veterinary care at practices sharing data with the VetCompass Programme in 2016.…”

“…Mean adult bodyweight was reported overall and broken down by sex for all breeds with adult bodyweight available for at least 100 dogs. Based on previous reports 43,101 , bodyweight was further categorized as "at or above the breed/sex mean", "below the breed/sex mean" and "no recorded bodyweight". Age was defined as the age (years) at December 31, 2016 and was categorised into five groups: ≤ 3.0, 3.0 to < 6.0, 6.0 to < 9.0, 9.0 to < 12.0 and ≥ 12.0.…”
