Unravelling a Proterozoic basin history through detrital zircon geochronology: The case of the Espinhaço Supergroup, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: a b s t r a c tNew U-Pb in situ zircon dating provides a new approach for the study of the Espinhaço Supergroup units exposed in the São Francisco Craton and Araçuaí Orogen. Located in Southern Espinhaço, Minas Gerais, the following two basins were formed in intraplate conditions: (i) the Lower Espinhaço Basin is marked by a volcano-sedimentary sequence with alluvial, fluvial and eolian deposits that were formed from 1.68 Ga to 1.80 Ga; (ii) the overlying sequence, called the Upper Espinhaço Basin, is a rift-s… Show more

“…For complementary quality control, a secondary standard was adopted using the Plešovice reference zircon (Slama et al 2008). Additional detailed methodology can be found in Chemale et al (2012). The LA-ICPMS data were reduced using the Glitter Software (Van Achterbergh et al 2001).…”

“…Analytical spots were conducted avoiding grain areas with inclusions, fractures and metamictic structures. An Excel sheet developed by Chemale et al (2012) was used to data reduction. Further methodology can be found in Gonçalves et al (2016).…”

“…The main stratigraphic unit that sustains the Espinhaço Range is the Espinhaço Supergroup, a Paleo to Mesoproterozoic metasedimentary sequence, probably deposited between 1.75 to 1.20 Ga (Dossin et al, 1990;Chemale Jr. et al, 2012). It is formed mainly by quartzite, interbedded with layers of phyllite and diamondbearing metaconglomerate.…”

“…1). Several unconformity-bounded stratigraphic successions have been characterized along southern and central Espinhaço regions and within the Paramirim aulacogen (Schobbenhaus 1996, Danderfer & Dardenne 2002, Chemale Jr. et al 2012, Danderfer et al 2009, Alkmim & Martins-Neto 2012, Guadagnin et al 2015, Cruz & Alkmim 2017. Each unconformity-bounded unit has been considered a record of an episode of basin formations within the Congo-São Francisco paleocontinent, beginning at 1.8 Ga. Generally, the Paleo-Mesoproterozoic-age units are mapped as Espinhaço Supergroup, and those of Neoproterozoic age are attributed to the supergroup of São Francisco (Schobbenhaus 1996, Martins-Neto et al 2001, Danderfer & Dardenne 2002, Alkmim & Martins-Neto 2012.…”
