Unraveling the Mystery of Auditory Brainstem Response Corrections: The Need for Universal Standards

Abstract: Toneburst ABR thresholds do not perfectly align with behavioral hearing thresholds. Universal protocols for the use of corrections are needed. Additionally, evidence-based procedures must be employed to obtain valid ABRs that will accurately estimate hearing thresholds.

“…To ensure the alignment between behavioral and electrophysiological methods, it is common to apply a correction factor that translates the thresholds of one system to another system. However, as of this time, there is not a single universal correction factor, and such factor differs based on the method or the system (Norrix & Velenovsky, 2017; Ghasemahmad & Farahani, 2019; Yeung & Wong, 2007; McCreery et al, 2015). To enable the translation between EEG and PTA thresholds, an additional study is required to uncover a correction factor to address this perceptual difference between long and short pure-tone.…”

“…It is important to note that use of ±2 standard deviations represents 95.5% of the population, and this should result in only a small number of inappropriate diagnoses. The ABR assessment is one of several clinical tests used by healthcare professionals to test for the presence of hearing loss [ 13 , 14 ]. Neurodiagnostics aims to detect retrocochlear pathologies present in the auditory nervous system that impair proper functioning of anatomical structures such as the proximal and distal portions of the auditory nerve, cochlear nuclei, superior olivary nuclei, lateral lemnisci, and inferior colliculi [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…We used SOD measurements as a tool to evaluate the effects of rutin on auditory neuropathy in diabetic rats. The restoration of SOD levels after neuropathy treatment has been investigated in many studies [ 15 , 16 , 18 ]. Our results also indicate that rutin ameliorates auditory neuropathy by normalizing SOD.…”

“…The reduction of MDA levels by rutin treatment furnishes evidence in support of this novel treatment for diabetic auditory neuropathy. MDA levels have been evaluated as an oxidative marker in some experimental and clinical trials of antioxidant agents, with relatively successful results [ 15 , 16 , 18 ].…”
