Unless We are Robots, Classical and Quantum Theories are Fundamentally Inadequate

Abstract: In classical physics, all change in nature is believed to take place in an unbroken chain of cause and effect. In quantum physics, change is believed to be irreducibly probabilistic, and perhaps even fundamentally random. Neither classical determinism nor orthodox quantum indeterminism is consistent with causally efficacious minds. If either is correct, we humans are robots with no free will. For a way out of this meaninglessness, recent progress toward a subtler nonlocal causal wave model of real mind is over… Show more

“…In the holistic Vedic account, the gross parts naturally congealed into more complex wholes of intelligent biological 'selves' with power to direct their own behavior (Boyer, 2014). With more refined experiences in higher states, the subtler, interdependent, non-physical, nonlocal level associated more with sentience appears even more real than the local physical level.…”

“…These models include a real place for mind to exist, from where it could actually cause change in the physical world. This would also mean free will is real (Boyer, 2014(Boyer, , 2011(Boyer, , 2009.…”

“…Neither classical determinism nor random quantum indeterminism can accommodate real free will. Causally efficacious conscious intentions require processes outside of determinate physical and indeterminate quantum processes for real free choice (Boyer, 2014).…”

“…If anything, the surging growth in the neurosciences and cognitive studies has sharpened interest in the problem. There has been a recent outpouring of materials on free will and determinism published in popular magazines (Bloom, 2014; Lawton & Churchland, 2013; Shariff & Vohs, 2014; Volk, 2013; Wilson, 2014; Yonck, 2013), academic journals (Boyer, 2014; Burns, 2014; Mills, 2013; Simonton, 2013), and books (Eagleman, 2011; Gazzaniga, 2011; Harris, 2012; Searl, 2007; Swinburne, 2011). There are few scholars, however, who can match the intensity of Freud’s little-known struggles with the issue.…”
