For-profit organizations play a considerable role in the dissemination of scientific research and information. In the case of direct-to-consumer genetic testing, this is important because how consumers learn about genetic science can influence health decisions and support for science. Through a content analysis of Twitter posts ( N = 1,000), this study examined how 23andMe balances traditional promotion, communicating product benefits, and sharing scientific research. Results indicated that about half of all posts share science news but sharing science has declined over time. Far fewer posts communicate about the products or their benefits, but these posts garner more retweets and replies.

El objetivo de este estudio es conocer cuál es la percepción que tienen los investigadores de las universidades españolas sobre el impacto que generan, sobre sus carreras profesionales, las noticias científicas que se publican con los resultados de sus actividades de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación (I+D+i). Para ello, se han seleccionado los datos obtenidos por una encuesta online realizada en el año 2016 de 602 investigadores y profesionales de la comunicación científica de 20 universidades de España, teniendo único requisito que alguna de sus publicaciones hubiera sido objeto de —al menos— una nota de prensa difundida por su universidad en los últimos cinco años. Para el análisis de los datos se han utilizado el test de diferencia significativa entre variables (prueba de la Z) y el test de independencia de Kruskal-Wallis. Según los resultados obtenidos, el personal investigador confía en los comunicadores de su institución más que en los periodistas de otros medios, y percibe que divulgar su producción científica le otorga más beneficios que perjuicios, lo cual no deja de plantear desafíos en el terreno de la profesionalización y divulgación científica.

When analysing the actors of the science communication ecosystem, scholarly research has focused on the perceptions and attitudes of scientists, science journalists, and science communicators. How the public envisages the roles of science producers and mediators is mostly uncharted territory. We address this gap, by examining the results of a public consultation in Portugal concerning science communication. We show that the public demonstrates a clear preference for science communication performed by scientists, over journalists, although credibility and trust depend on multiple factors. We also ascertain that professional science communicators are mostly invisible, though the public recognises the value of `translators'.
