The fact that the cyber environment does not have clear boundaries, and the difficulties in taking control of this environment, can turn online sharing into a source of concern in terms of privacy. In particular, the tendency of internet addicts to use the internet uncontrollably can increase the probability of experiencing privacy concerns. This research aims to reveal the relationship between internet addiction levels and online privacy concerns of university youth, one of the segments most addressed by web-based communication technologies. The research was designed with a cross-sectional and correlational survey design within the scope of quantitative research methods. The sample of the research consists of 524 students studying at a state university in Turkey. Quantitative data were collected face-to-face through an introductory information form, and a questionnaire including the scales of “Online Privacy Concern” and “Internet Addiction”. The study determined that online privacy concerns were significantly higher among first-year students, female students, and those using Instagram accounts. It was determined that male students had higher internet addiction levels. In the study, it was revealed that as the internet addiction levels of university students increased, their online privacy concerns also increased. In addition, it was determined that internet addiction explained 15.7% of the total variance of online privacy concerns. Based on the positive relationship between internet addiction and online privacy concern levels of university students, it can be said that the problems related to internet use intersect, intertwine and feed each other.

The purpose of this study was to reveal middle school students’ digital literacy levels and their opinions about digital literacy. Convergent parallel design, one of the mixed-method designs, was used in the study. Quantitative part involved survey while qualitative part included case-study model. Digital literacy scale and semi-structured interview form were used to collect the data. The participants in the quantitative part involved 367 students studying at a state middle school in Kırşehir while 12 students took part in the qualitative part. The data analysis was conducted separately, and general conclusions were drawn and combined during interpretation. Although students had high scores from the digital literacy scale, the in-depth qualitative analyses showed that they did not have adequate information about the concept of digital literacy. Moreover, the quantitative results showed that students, who used digital technologies for research purposes, had higher scores from the security dimension of digital literacy scale than the students who used digital technologies for studying. However, the qualitative results revealed that students used digital technologies most commonly for entertainment. It was found that students’ digital literacy was significantly differed by their gender, grade level, book-reading duration, and internet-use duration while it did not significantly differ by their purpose of using digital technologies. Additionally, based on the qualitative results, students agreed that social studies course contributed to their digital literacy.

PurposeOnline privacy pertains to an individual’s capacity to regulate and oversee the gathering and distribution of online information. Conversely, online privacy concern (OPC) pertains to the protection of personal information, along with the worries or convictions concerning potential risks and unfavorable outcomes associated with its collection, utilization and distribution. With a holistic approach to these relationships, this study aims to model the relationships between digital literacy (DL), digital data security awareness (DDSA) and OPC and how these relationships vary by gender.Design/methodology/approachThe participants of this study are 2,835 university students. Data collection tools in the study consist of personal information form and three different scales. Partial least squares (PLS), structural equation modeling (SEM) and multi-group analysis (MGA) were used to test the framework determined in the context of the research purpose and to validate the proposed hypotheses.FindingsDL has a direct and positive effect on digital data security awareness (DDSA), and DDSA has a positive effect on OPC. According to the MGA results, the hypothesis put forward in both male and female sub-samples was supported. The effect of DDSA on OPC is higher for males.Originality/valueThis study highlights the positive role of DL and perception of data security on OPC.
