Universal Design for Learning: Guiding Principles to Reduce Barriers to Digital & Media Literacy Competence

Abstract: Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework for designing instruction to address the wide range of learner variation in today's inclusive classrooms, can be applied effectively to broaden access, understanding, and engagement in digital and media literacy learning for ALL. UDL supports constructivist learning principles. UDL strategies and methods encourage development of expert learners though personal engagement and motivation. UDL transforms one-size-fits-all instruction into diverse, multiple, and acc… Show more

“…Consequently, the health literacy skills and abilities of the users need to be considered in the development of effective applications (Broderick et al., 2014; Monkman & Kushniruk, 2013). The principles of universal design for learning provide a response to technology barriers via the adoption of multiple and flexible presentations; enabling practice of tasks with different support; as well as the provision of interesting and varied learning opportunities that stimulate learning (Dalton, 2017). In addition, keeping the user interface simple and selecting appropriate font type and size are important when designing a user-friendly interface for applications (Gurupur & Wan, 2017).…”

“…Therefore, it is clear that with the right approach, students can help us customize the display of information on anatomy modules' virtual learning environments (Fig. 2) and contribute to a range of more accessible learning opportunities, which reduces barriers in instruction (Dalton, 2017).…”

“…The partnership model encourages production of 'multiple means of representation' and fits with the ideals of 'multiple means of engagement'. Therefore, it is clear that with the right approach, students can help us customize the display of information on anatomy modules' virtual learning Accepted Article environments (Figure 2) and contribute to a range of more accessible learning opportunities, which reduces barriers in instruction (Dalton, 2017).…”

“…While gamification is a strategy to promote learning utilizing game-related elements that offer important criticism and collaboration, unbending and rigid educational programs and appraisals impose barriers on some students, especially the individuals who are distinguished as who have learning disabilities. (Dalton 2017;Everett and Oswald 2018). Moreover, when feedback and motivation are primarily point-driven, the path toward learning might become subservient to finding the "right" answer.…”
