PurposeThis paper aims to understand how the sustainability theme has been incorporated into the new Olympic planning guidelines based on analysing the case of Tokyo (2020), which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachFor this, field research using the case study method was carried out that involved 21 in-depth interviews with experts from different entities affected by the event.FindingsAs a result, it was possible to identify that some characteristics already presented in the Tokyo project came to break away from the gigantism observed in the past Olympic editions in an attempt to demonstrate alignment with the new principles brought by the IOC (2020) and 2020 + 5 Agenda that had as one of its main objectives to simplify the Olympics, making the event more sustainable and accessible for future host societies.Originality/valueAt the end, some trends for the future of the Olympic Games are also presented in order to guide future studies in the area, as well as help the future host cities and their companies in planning their investments.

Mega-events occupy important roles within global consumer societies, and so, this article aims to advance the sociological understanding of mega-events by using UEFA Euro 2020 as a case. Traditionally, sport mega-events have been staged in one or two countries. However, for the first time ever, 12 European countries shared the hosting rights for Euro 2020, which was postponed for a year following COVID-19. In global sports, this temporary shift was highly remarkable and the 12-country format’s implications raised a host of sociological questions. Drawing upon qualitative interviews, documentary analysis and media sources, this article examines this mega-event’s distinctive format and its broader implications. The article explores the socio-political conditions under which Euro 2020’s format became a reality and examines stakeholder outlooks on this event format. It is argued that the event’s format was considered to limit negative ‘legacies’ for host cities, yet the format was perceived to generate logistical and financial difficulties for potential mega-event consumers. In an epoch characterized by growing opposition to mega-event hosting, such findings are particularly important.

World Cup is a mega sports event enjoyed and built in the name of sport. However, as the community grows, World Cup becomes a sporting event and a political encounter. Each country is trying to be the best, and in order to achieve this, many seek mutual profit or increase power value during the event. Multivector Analysis was used to analyse social media content related to the Qatar 2022 World Cup. With the help of social media and Political Correctness, it becomes visible that these countries are trying to obtain their goals and match victory. Vulnerabilities, powers, and many faces accompany the condiments of the Qatar World Cup 2022. With a historical ancestry in FIFA, Political Correctness is like their anthems. Having a non-Western host would be a struggle against a larger country, resulting in a player exchange that allows them to become immigrants embroiled in heated political tensions because any country by nature still has a strong bias towards its land and its race.
