Unique Infill Configuration To Unlock Additional Barrels in the Boscán Heavy-Oil Water-Injection Project

Abstract: Summary Boscán is a giant multibillion-barrel heavy-oil (10.5 °API and asphaltic) field in Venezuela. Although a large part of the field is on primary production with a low recovery factor (<6%), water injection has been successfully implemented in portions of the field for more than 15 years, with improved recovery. High-mobility-ratio-waterflood (HMRWF) behavior and associated key production mechanisms obtained from detailed field-data analysis and dynamic modeling are presented. A nove… Show more

“…Another important aspect to consider for the implementation of the ISC method in the FPO is the variation of water saturation, which can vary between 7 and 100% due to the presence of aquifers and/or flushed zones. It is important to mention that thermal methods in areas with high water risks (adverse mobility ratio), both in the Eastern Venezuela and Lake Maracaibo basins, have not been technically and economically feasible. , In these reservoirs, methods such as chemical injection or water injection have been envisaged. ,, …”

“…Many large-scale dominant channels are formed in the deep part of the reservoir, resulting in serious inefficient and ineffective circulation, decreasing oil production and rising water content too fast in oil wells. Depth dissection technology is one of the most effective ways to improve the wave and volume of injected fluid and control inefficient and ineffective circulation [86,87]. The deep dissection will encounter a vicious environment of high temperature and high mineralization, and to solve the above problems, it is necessary to study the temperature and salt-resistant dissection and water plugging agent for low permeability and high-water-bearing wells to improve the recovery rate.…”
