Unfolding the Notion of Experience (Virtual) Prototyping: A Framework for Prototyping in an Experience-Driven Design Process

Abstract: Along with the rise of Experience Design, the term Experience Prototyping was coined to describe the practice of prototyping for an experience-driven design approach. However, limited resources are available to define what Experience Prototyping is, which approaches it entails, and its scopes within the product development process. To answer these questions, we first discuss the fundamental definition of Prototyping itself, proposing a model that can describe Experience Prototyping too. The model details the p… Show more

“…The cyber-empathic design used embedded sensors to visualise user-product interactions, which was demonstrated by a case study visualising the distribution of forces in the shoe sole (Ghosh et al, 2017). Biomechanical aspects of user-product interactions were measured by motion captures and visualised for the designers' inspiration (Camere et al, 2015;Miehling & Wartzack, 2015;Wolf et al, 2019).…”

“…The design process uses prototyping to allow some end users to engage with products and services on a limited scale prior to their full release to the full population for which they are designed (Camere & Bordegoni, 2016). Using broad-based teams, the prototyping process is driven by waves of convergent and divergent thinking that enables those creating the end product or service to learn from one another (Coleman, 2016;Deitering & Filar-Williams, 2018).…”

“…Prototyping is commonly found within the design process used in industrial fabricators in the development of products and services (Desrosier, 2011). It serves a creative and economic purpose to assist in revisions as the product is developed and improved (Camere & Bordegoni, 2016;Meier & Miller, 2016). It also has economic advantages as prototypes can be evaluated for their suitability prior to broader adoption (Medlej, Stuban, & Dever, 2017).…”

“…Whether to explore novel concepts by building to think (Brown and Katz, 2011), or enhance an existing solution through refinement (Camburn et al, 2017), the prototype plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between an idea and its tangible form. Camere and Bordegoni (2016), describe prototyping as an engagement with the product to be, where the prototype approximates various features that constitute a final product, service, or system. Designers frequently manipulate the prototype in order to refine and enhance the final product through what Schon and Wiggins (1992) describe as a reflective conversation with the materials of the design solution.…”
