This paper reports on a community-based project to collaboratively research, design and test an integrated digital crisis planning tool for youth ages 13 to 24. Research goals included understanding: what crisis means to the target group and what strategies they employ for coping with crisis; the ways youth in crisis are most likely to communicate; how new technologies can help deliver the services youth need. The project was established with several guiding principles: that students should act as the front line researchers and designers with the guidance of faculty and community partners; that we should aim to move beyond consultation to truly participatory design methods involving end-users in needs identification, idea generation, design development and testing; and that by having the students interface with the end-users, we would alter the power balance by building trust and avoiding a top-down approach.

Participatory Design strives to open up the decision-making process and empower all those who may be affected by design. This is opposed to Design as a non-participatory process, in which the power to make decisions is vested in the hands of one group to the possible detriment of others. In this paper we interrogate the nature, possibilities and limitations of Participatory Design through the perspective of Child Computer Interaction (CCI) and Animal Computer Interaction (ACI). Due to the cognitive and communication characteristics, and to the social and legal status of their participants, researchers in these communities have to contend with and challenge existing notions of participation and design. Thus, their theories and practices provide a lens through which the nature and goals of Participatory Design can be examined with a view to facilitating the development of more inclusive participatory models and practices. This paper presents a model to guide the design of participatory design (PD) projects, which was generated through methodological reflection on a programme of digital health and care research. Building on wide use of the term spaces within PD literature and theory, the model comprises seven spaces that can be designed to support diverse stakeholders to engage in a PD process. The model encourages reflection on the capacity of participants to critically and creatively engage with the concepts being proposed, in order to design a process to scaffold participation. Aiming to support PD practitioners and researchers to identify the combination and sequence of hybrid spaces required to move participants and concepts towards resolved designs, the model guides the careful design of each space supported by examples of practice. The model is also designed to enable reflective practice and articulation of PD processes to support integration within multidisciplinary collaborations.
