Unfolded resonant converter with current doubler structure module for welding applications

Abstract: Abstract-A new multiphase resonant converter arrangement with series dual phase in the primary side and parallel dual current doubler in the secondary side, operating as a phase shift controlled current source is presented. Sharing the voltage and current stress among the active and passive components with a high DC input voltage and arc current motivates this structure, which also uses WBG devices to increase the efficiency at high switching frequency. The resulting module is intended to operate in continuous… Show more

“…Given this, sources for pulse-arc welding are being developed [14]. Since improving the output current change dynamics requires an increase in the switching rate of key elements, sources based on resonance converters are being developed [15,16]. Moreover, in order to reduce dynamic losses, they use the transfer of active power on the higher harmonics of the output signal of the inverter [17].…”

“…Load-resonant converters are being used in welding applications for their advantages like higher efficiency, low electro magnetic interference etc. [1][2][3]. In MMA welding applications as soon as the arc is extinguished, an open circuit occurs.…”

“…In [3], Pollock et al established that a series-parallel loadresonant converter that can limit the short circuit current (SCC) and limit the OCV. In [2], Azcondo et al proposed a 3 rd order LC S C P converter in two stages with a common mid-point voltage. This converter has many magnetic elements in the circuit which increases the loss and makes the system bulky.…”

“…They also have a wide operating frequency range and thus do not need filter inductors so that the volume and weight are comparatively reduced. On the other hand, resonant converters produce higher RMS current values than their square waveform counterparts, causing increased conduction losses [5].…”

“…Figure 1 shows the circuit diagram of a welding machine including a full-bridge SRC. The welding arc is modeled with a series connected resistor and voltage source [5]. The three-phase rectifier converts the AC power from grid to DC voltage, which is then converted to high-frequency ac voltage by an H-bridge inverter, feeding a resonant network.…”
