Unexpected fluorescence emission of poly(α,β‐L‐malic acid) in aqueous medium

Abstract: Unexpected fluorescence of poly(a,b-L-malic acid) (a,b-PMA) without traditional fluorophore was observed firstly. This fluorescent polymer was synthesized via melt polycondensation of L-malic acid. The polymer was characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (IR), Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy (Raman), and X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD). The high molecular… Show more

“…Among these polymers, HBPSi-GA3 has the strongest fluorescence and thus is chosen as the model for further exploration. Amazingly, under the emission peak at 450 nm these polymers have four excitation peaks at about 238, 262, 300, and 360 nm, respectively, which is quite different from the reported unconventional fluorescent polymers. , Optical property, dynamic light scattering (DLS), TEM, and DFT calculations were employed to study the multiexcitation property.…”
