Abstract: International audienceThe e-Geopolis database allows the measurement of population change in German urban areas from 1820 to 2010. The demographic slow-down explains to a large extent the decline of cities’ populations. This decline is widespread and severe in Germany but the post-war political division corresponds with two different time scales.
