Understanding the Impact and Control of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea in Cattle Populations

Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) affects cattle populations around the world, with significant financial consequences. The losses associated with BVD stem from reproductive loss (in acutely infected cattle), poor productivity of immunotolerant, persistently infected cattle, and indirect losses due to increased occurrence of other diseases because of BVD-related immunosuppression. Control or eradication of BVD is a valuable strategy to reduce losses and ease animal suffering and appears economically justified in th… Show more

“…In the case of BVDV other authors found a prevalence of 14%, whereas our study found that 11.3% of the analyzed samples were positive. Differences in prevalence between studies could be explained by aspects such as regions, diagnostic techniques, production systems, herd size, and handling practices (17).…”

“…Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an important viral pathogen of cattle that has spread globally and that causes significant economic loss to both dairy and beef cattle [1]. BVDV causes thousands and up to tens of millions of dollars of loss per calving interval [2] due to productivity and reproductive disorders in the herd [3]. Around 70-90% of infected cattle show no clinical signs [4-6].…”
