Para a região Semiárida, informações das condições hídricas são indispensáveis no estabelecimento de estratégias de manejo da produção agrícola. Assim, objetivou-se definir um procedimento metodológico para análise da variabilidade e anomalia da chuva e do extrato do balanço hídrico climatológico sequencial (BHCS), e suas tendências de mudanças ao longo do tempo. Para tal, foram usados dados de chuva do município de Carnaíba, referente à série de 1965 a 2006 e posteriormente submetidos à estatística descritiva, sendo proposta uma metodologia para detectar variabilidades e anomalias climáticas pelos desvios da precipitação pluviométrica. Em seguida, procedeu-se com análise de tendências dos dados anuais e mensais, sendo significativos desde que p<0,10. Os resultados revelaram que a maior precipitação anual foi de 1921,5 mm, e a menor de 49,6 mm. Houve tendência significativa de redução da precipitação apenas para o mês de junho (p<0,05) e para os valores anuais (p<0,10). Diagnosticou-se que 45% dos anos foram enquadrados na classe “Anos Normais”, e que nos meses de agosto a outubro, o número de anomalias inferiores foi maior que 50%. Em relação ao BHCS, apenas os componentes déficit hídrico e retirada de água do solo apresentaram tendências significativas. Verificou-se que, entre os anos de 1965 e 2006, os eventos de variabilidade e anomalia climática inferiores foram eventos mais frequentes, todavia, se devem a sua ocorrência nos meses mais secos e que houve oscilações anuais e mensais dos componentes do BHCS, indicando alta variabilidade do regime pluviométrico local.

Biogeochemical cycling is essential to establish and maintain plant and animal communities. Litter is one of main compartments of this cycle, and the kinetics of leaf decomposition in forest litter depend on the chemical composition and environmental conditions. This study evaluated the effect of leaf composition and environmental conditions on leaf decomposition of native Atlantic Forest trees. The following species were analyzed: Mabea fistulifera Mart., Bauhinia forficata Link., Aegiphila sellowiana Cham., Zeyheria tuberculosa (Vell), Luehea grandiflora Mart. et. Zucc., Croton floribundus Spreng., Trema micrantha (L) Blume, Cassia ferruginea (Schrad) Schrad ex DC, Senna macranthera (DC ex Collad.) H. S. Irwin and Barney and Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Anacardiaceae). For each species, litter bags were distributed on and fixed to the soil surface of soil-filled pots (in a greenhouse), or directly to the surface of the same soil type in a natural forest (field). Every 30 days, the dry weight and soil basal respiration in both environments were determined. The cumulative decomposition of leaves varied according to the species, leaf nutrient content and environment. In general, the decomposition rate was lowest for Aegiphila sellowiana and fastest for Bauhinia forficate and Schinus terebinthifolius. This trend was similar under the controlled conditions of a greenhouse and in the field. The selection of species with a differentiated decomposition pattern, suited for different stages of the recovery process, can help improve soil restoration.

Variations in Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon and Soil Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Re-Vegetation of Hilly Slopes with Purple Soil

Crust restoration is increasingly being done but we lack quantitative information on soil improvements. The study aimed to elucidate the dynamics involving soil microbial biomass carbon and soil dissolved organic carbon in the re-vegetation chronosequences of a hillslope land with purple soil in Hengyang, Hunan Province. The soil can cause serious disasters with both soil erosion and seasonal drought, and also becomes a typical representative of ecological disaster area in South China. Using the space-for-time method, we selected six typical sampling plots, designated as follows: grassplot community, meadow thicket community, frutex community, frutex and arbor community, arbor community, and top-level vegetation community. These plots were established to analyze the changes in soil microbial biomass carbon, soil microbial quotien, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon/soil organic carbon, and soil basal respiration in 0–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm soil layers. The relationships of these parameters with soils physic-chemical properties were also determined. The ecological environment of the 6 plant communities is similar and typical; they denoted six different successive stages of restoration on hillslopes with purple soils in Hengyang, Hunan Province. The soil microbial biomass carbon and soil basal respiration contents decreased with increasing soil depth but increased with re-vegetation. By contrast, soil microbial quotient increased with increasing soil depth and re-vegetation. From 0–10 cm soil layer to 20–40 cm soil layer, the dissolved organic carbon content decreased in different re-vegetation stages. In the process of re-vegetation, the dissolved organic carbon content increased in the 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil layers, whereas the dissolved organic carbon content decreased after an initial increase in the 20–40 cm soil layers. Meanwhile, dissolved organic carbon/soil organic carbon increased with increasing soil depth but decreased with re-vegetation. Significant correlations existed among soil microbial biomass carbon, soil microbial quotient, dissolved organic carbon, soil basal respiration and soil physic-chemical properties associated with soil fertility. The results showed that re-vegetation was conducive to the soil quality improvement and the accumulation of soil organic carbon pool of the hillslope land with purple soil in Hengyang, Hunan Province.
