Understanding the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition to improve ultrasound training for obstetrics and gynaecology trainees

Abstract: There have been significant problems in ultrasound training since the introduction of the new postgraduate curriculum for obstetrics and gynaecology. It is therefore important to understand how the skill of ultrasound is acquired in order to be able to improve the training program. Here, the potential application of the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition has been analysed to map the progression from novice to master and the progressions between each stage analysed. “…The Australasian Sonographers Association (ASA) competency framework cites the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition, in which the five stages of learning are aligned with the level of competency and the practice pathways (Table ). Field demonstrates how the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition can be mapped to the progression from novice to expert and master in sonography. Both Field and the ASA place basic training at the ‘competent’ level.…”

“…Field demonstrates how the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition can be mapped to the progression from novice to expert and master in sonography. Both Field and the ASA place basic training at the ‘competent’ level. The ASA reminds practitioners of the role of continuing professional development (CPD), providing advancement to the level of proficiency and a pathway towards expert practice.…”

By developing sophisticated forms of recall, recognition, decision, and awareness, learners move from the rule-based, analytical novice stage to the intuitive, experience-driven mastery stage for a particular skill.…”
