The main goal of the paper is to provide a statistical categorization of small and micro knowledge-intensive business service (KIBS) companies, based on their knowledge management (KM) attitude. Since knowledge is the main production factor and output of these companies, it is essential to achieve a better understanding of how they manage this resource. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted on a sample of Polish small and micro KIBS operating in various service sectors. A cluster analysis of the data was performed, to categorize the sample according to the KM attitude of the companies. Three main groups of companies were identified, varying in terms of their levels of "knowledge needs", "intensity of use" of KM practices and "perceived barriers to KM implementation". This classification is shown to characterize attitudes towards KM to a higher level of statistical significance than do structural characteristics. The survey was based on a single country sample. On the one hand, this provides consistency to the analysis. On the other hand, further insights can be obtained by a multi-national study. In addition, cluster analysis is exploratory in nature. The results provide useful insights for policy makers (to formulate policies for facilitating KM implementation in small KIBS) and managers (to reflect on the KM attitudes of their company). The statistical categorization of small and micro KIBS in terms of their KM attitude has been very rarely undertaken. Even the most recent investigations of KM issues used samples from large companies.

Fluxos de conhecimento são estruturas que possibilitam compartilhar o conhecimento organizacional a fim de atender as necessidades da organização. Devido a Pandemia de COVID-19 as organizações precisaram reestruturar seus fluxos de conhecimento a fim de manter suas operações. O presente trabalho busca compreender como as empresas de serviços superaram as barreiras ao fluxo de conhecimento. Três gestores foram entrevistados a fim de identificar as barreiras e os meio de superação delas. Quatro categorias de barreiras foram identificadas: (i) infraestrutura e tecnologia; (ii) gestão e comunicação; (iii) bem-estar; (iv) conhecimento. A adoção da tecnologia da informação e comunicação foi a estratégia principal para a superação das barreiras, mas elas só se mostraram eficazes quando da combinação com liderança adequada, disponibilidade de infraestrutura para trabalho remoto e participação ativa dos recursos humanos.

This study explores value propositions in knowledge‐intensive business services (KIBS). More specifically, this study investigates how to facilitate the effective communication of value to customers in the KIBS context by employing a qualitative case study method. The findings address the importance of trust in developing a solid client relationship to foster successful collaboration and open communication, thus creating a basis for constructing customer knowledge, and also indicate that the phase and intimacy of the relationship both influence which criteria are emphasised during the purchasing process. Consequently, this study challenges the idea that value propositions are always co‐created at every phase of the KIBS customer relationship, and it distinguishes the factors that facilitate the communication of value in these relationships. The understanding gained through this study offers practical insights and will help KIBS firms successfully communicate value to their clients.
