Factors Affecting Farm Succession and Occupational Choices of Nominated Farm Successors in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Mountain farming communities in Pakistan are exhibiting an increased rate of rural-to-urban migration and a rapid growth in the non-farm sector, which has threatened the sustenance of agricultural activity. This study examined the determinants of farm succession using a logit regression model and employed a multinomial logit regression model to study the factors influencing the future occupational choices of the potential farm successors. The study was based on quantitative survey data obtained from 421 farm managers and 155 potential farm successors and qualitative data from 12 key informants from two different districts in Gilgit-Baltistan. The survey results show that around 67% of the farmers had a potential successor. Farm succession was mainly explained by farmer characteristics (e.g., farmer age, gender and education), farm characteristics (e.g., farm size, specialization in horticulture, etc.) and agricultural income. Regarding the occupational choices, part-time farming (66%) was the most commonly reported choice. The results indicate that it was mainly farm successors’ personal characteristics (such as age, education and marital status) and agricultural income that led to the choices “undecided” and “exit”, whilst farm characteristics (e.g., farm size) and the main farm operators’ non-farm activity were significantly associated with the choice “part-time”. Policies aimed at improving the local income situation and investments in skill-building and infrastructure development can assist in farm sustenance.

The security of farmland property rights is an important factor that affects farmland investment and succession, and farm succession is highly significant for achieving sustainable agricultural development. In this study, based on survey data obtained from 1012 apple growers in Shandong and Shaanxi Provinces, we analyzed the impact of land tenure security on the farm succession willingness of farmers and related paths by constructing binary logistic regression and mediating effect models. The results showed that: (1) land tenure security plays a significant role in promoting the farm succession willingness of farmers; and that (2) land tenure security promotes farm succession willingness by improving the farmland investment intentions of farmers. In the future, reforms of the farmland property rights system need to ensure the security of farmland property rights. In addition, with the influence of climate change, it is necessary to encourage farmers with advantageous agricultural resource endowments to invest in farmland and intergenerational transfers, as well as inducing farmers who lack advantageous agricultural resource endowments to conduct non-agricultural transfers, thereby providing more opportunities and a greater development area for agricultural land transfers and agricultural-scale operations.

To achieve social sustainability, there is a need to incorporate social metrics of farmers’ well‐being into agricultural monitoring systems. We contribute to the operationalisation of the measurement of farmers’ well‐being by determining how farm‐level factors influence farmers’ satisfaction with their work and quality of life. Using a data sample of 1099 farms that are part of the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) in nine European countries, we tested a set of hypotheses related to work satisfaction and life quality perception based on a structural equation model. Satisfaction with on‐farm work has a significant and substantial influence on satisfaction with quality of life. Farm‐level aspects, such as working time, age of assets, financial situation of the farm and community engagement, significantly influenced farmers’ satisfaction with farming, but their joint effect explained less than one‐fifth of the satisfaction. The results suggest that agricultural information systems intended to monitor and compare sustainability progress on farms would benefit from the integration of a metric measuring social concerns from the farmers’ point of view.
